In
1995 after being one of the DJ team involved with the
Planet of Sound all-nighters at Bagleys warehouse - the
team ended up at the Astoria 1 doing bi-weekly events
on a Saturday night that ran from 11pm-6am.
After much arguing amongst ourselves we came up with the
name Club X based on the following reasons, that X marks
the spot and that the sex shop next to Cheapo Cheapo,
a second-hand record shop which we all frequented was
also called Club X and it made us laugh.
See flyer section for the original line up including Erol
Alkan and James from Trash
who were with us for many years before they begun to make
too much money solo. After about a year and a half of
bumpy fortune, I ended up as the in-house promoter working
for the then owner Brian Mason after the other promoters
fell out. We moved venues and nights of the week as the
Carwash disco experience arrived and replaced the failing
Friday as a regular weekly event keeping more normal club
times to make it cost effective.
Throughout there were always at least eight DJs on rotation
and we tried to keep the main floor fresh with new indie
and alternative rock, whilst the top bars played retro
and rock! The main floor residents Dancing Dan (top well
kept secret that was him dancing in the Toploader vid),
and Urchin were around the corner at the same time DJing
Indie Pounder and garnishing praise from far and wide.
Urchin was also resident at Beautiful
People and Tony has been busy making a name for himself
in Croydon and Guildford.
Finally though in October 2003 we have escaped to Carling
Islington Academy (click
here for info) which is what we think you lot deserved
all along - a nice well run venue with polite security
and cheap drinks and entry which isn't going to get knocked
down for Cross rail developments.
So it's all good again.... all old membership cards will
be honoured - we can swap them over and it's now called
Xplosive. |
